Some Highlights of Central New York

Great New York State Fair

The Great New York State Fair is a 13-day showcase of agriculture, entertainment, education and technology. With midway rides, concessionaires, exhibits and concerts, it has become New York's largest annual event and an end-of-summer tradition for hundreds of thousands of families from all corners of the state. The first fair took place in Syracuse in 1841 and took permanent residence there in 1890. It is the oldest and one of the largest state fairs in the United States, with nearly one million visitors annually.

Festivals & Annual Events

Food and drink enthusiasts will want to keep tabs on the many Oktoberfest celebrations. Instead of traveling all the way to Munich, head to Adirondack Brewery Oktoberfest for a party that will include dancing, seasonal beers, tasty locally sourced dishes, and the popular keg toss competition! And Oktoberfest Weekends at Hunter Mountain are a draw in the Catskills throughout the fall. Of course, fall's highlights include grape and hops harvesting, pumpkin beer, and apple picking, which means that New York State's wineries, breweries, and cider distilleries will be hosting events galore that are fun fof the whole whole family!

Syracuse University Musical Drama Department

Musical theater is one of the most exciting and demanding professions in the performing arts. As a musical theater performer, you must possess strong technical skills in acting, voice, music, and dance and the ability to integrate these skills with ease, expressiveness, and versatility.

Our bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) degree program focuses on the development of your individual talents and abilities with the aim of helping you to discover your uniqueness as a musical theater artist. This rigorous program requires coursework in three areas of performance—singing, dancing, and acting—as well as foundations in liberal arts and theater history.

Syracuse Dance Culture

Creations has a history of being an inclusive group. It was founded more than 40 years ago by 10 women of color when African-American students were not given the opportunity to showcase their talents in other groups.

Today, the group differentiates itself from other campus dance groups by having a small company that performs everything from jazz to hip-hop, but continues to honor its past by performing an African-gospel dance in its annual show at the end of the fall semester.
